Positive Displacement

A popular form of positive displacement pump is that known as a peristaltic hose pump.  These machines utilize a compression squeezing motion known as peristalsis which pushes liquid through a separated, changeable tube.  They tend to be good for moving thick, viscous liquids, and even substances that are largely solids. They offer a gentle rate of flow, ideal for certain jobs--those that require a touch of light finesse (moving water containing small animals, for example), expect specific dosing of ingredients (such as in food and beverage production), or involve more volatile ingredients (e.g. fluids with high acidity).

How It Works

Peristalsis is the term for a specific, fluid movement that involves compressing the flow of an area along a tube in a repetitive, wave-like motion.  The series of contractions pushes whatever may be inside the tube forward, making space for the next wave. This motion can be observed in nature.  Consider the movement of a worm through the ground. The segmented portion of the earthworm acts as a compression unit, pushing the creature through the earth as it moves the earth through the creature.   Peristalsis is also incredibly important to humans--food moves through our entire body, from the throat through the digestive tract, in a series of peristaltic tubes. Peristaltic hose pumps are just a technological way of using this same compression principle to drive matter through tubing, imposing a continuous series of contractions along a section of the conduit.

Features

At Process & Power, we know that not every task needs a heavy touch.  Some materials require soft handling to maintain their composition, and some jobs demand exact measurements.  By using peristalsis, these pumps provide both a gentility of motion and precision in metering necessary for those particular chores.  Our pumps can handle dense flows at a rate of up to 660 gallons per minute at pressures of up to 230 psi. Slurries that contain up to 80% solid matter are no problem at all.

Features:

  • Sealless

  • Unaffected by Abrasive Products

  • Run Dry with No Damage

  • Highly Accurate Metering

Ease Of Maintenance

Because of its separated tubing element, peristaltic hose pumps are quite easy to maintain and keep clean.  The interchangeable hoses are built to contain any toxic or corrosive elements, protecting the machinery from decay.  They are sealless and oil-free, and ergo cleaner than many other forms of positive displacement pumps which transfer wastes directly through their chambers and require a collection of seals, links, and valves to be maintained.   So long as the pipeline used for each specific job is properly designed for the task at hand and correctly installed into the curvature of the system, none of the transferred medium should ever touch the machine itself.
